Colombian coffee growers from Cauca and Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta took part in BIOFACH, the world’s leading trade fair for organic food, which was held from February 12 to 15 in Nuremberg, Germany.

Visitors from over 130 countries learned about organic coffees produced in the departments of Magdalena, Cesar, Santander, Cauca and Valle del Cauca, mostly by rural and indigenous communities that meet strict international standards, such as those of the European Union, Japan and the USA, among others.

Professionals and experts from the world of coffee, in addition to general public, attended this event looking for the most recent novelties and best certified organic products in a growing market.

Taking part in these events aims to generate greater demand for organic Colombian coffee (there are currently over 5,000 ha), as supply from other countries such as Mexico and Peru has been strongly hit by rust outbreaks.

As a competitive advantage, Colombia features rust-resistant varieties (which do not require fungicides) and can therefore make up for this supply deficit.

Organic coffees are produced free from agrochemicals (fungicides, herbicides, insecticides, chemical fertilizers), with special care for ecosystems, and are duly certified.
