  • It was organized by the FNC with the best coffees of the 4th national quality competition “Colombia, Land of Diversity.” The price was reached by coffee grower Wilton Renso Benítez, from Villamaría, Caldas.
  • Diego Samuel Bermúdez, also from Villamaría, sold his coffee for 35 USD/lb, the second highest price at the auction.
  • “We have exceptional coffees and exceptional coffee growers who make great efforts and deserve a more decent price for their coffee,” the FNC CEO, Roberto Vélez, said.

Bogotá, April 13, 2019 (FNC Press Office) – Two exceptional coffee lots, both from Caldas, were sold today at Colombia’s first coffee auction abroad, within the framework of the US Specialty Coffee Association (SCA), the most important of its kind, in Boston, Massachusetts; one of the lots was sold at 54 USD/lb; the other, at 35 USD/lb.

The auction was organized by the Colombian Coffee Growers Federation (FNC) with the 23 best coffees of the 4th national quality competition “Colombia, Land of Diversity,” the most important in the country, whose winners were awarded last April 4 in Santa Marta, Magdalena.

The 54 USD/lb price was obtained by coffee grower Wilton Renso Benítez, from the department of Caldas, municipality of Villamaría, El Paraíso farm.

This is a new record in the history of Colombian coffee auctions, as in 2017 the highest price of 50.50 USD/lb had been achieved at the auction held during Cafés de Colombia Expo 2017, in Bogotá.

“We are pleased to record these results that confirm quality of Colombian coffee and the need to continue seeking, in all possible stages, shared responsibility of the coffee value chain so that producers receive fairer prices,” the FNC CEO, Roberto Vélez, said.

“We have exceptional coffees and exceptional coffee growers who make great efforts and deserve a more decent price for their coffee,” he added.

On April 4, Benítez won second place in the exotic attribute in the Small Lots category of the competition.

The auction base price was 3.50 USD/lb, so the 54 USD/lb is more than 15 times the base price and almost 60 times the international benchmark (NYKC, 90.40 ¢/lb)

Diego Samuel Bermúdez’s coffee, from Villamaría, Caldas (El Paraíso farm), was sold at 35 USD/lb and reached the auction as one of the competition’s big winners, as he ranked first in the body and exotic attributes (in the Small Lots category).

Benitez’s coffee was bought by Procafecol Juan Valdez®, and Bermúdez’s by the Australian importing company Latorre & Dutch.

Diego Samuel and Wilton Renso make up the Indestec society, which develops coffee technology and processes. Their El Paraíso farm, in Villamaría, is located at 1,860 meters above sea level, which gives coffee exotic flavors.
