  • Both delegations talked about the first World Coffee Producers Forum, to be held in Medellin, Colombia, next year, among other issues.

Brasilia, October 25, 2016 (FNC Press Office) – With the presence of the Brazilian Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Francisco de Assis da Silva, a delegation of the Brazilian Government met with a delegation of the Colombian Coffee Growers Federation (FNC) led by its CEO, Roberto Vélez, at the Ministry’s headquarters.

The Brazilian hosts described the visit as historic, for it is the first in 20 years by Colombian coffee growers to the Ministry responsible for Brazil’s coffee sector.

About the first World Coffee Producers Forum, to be held in Medellin, Colombia, from July 10 to 12, 2017, within the framework of the 90th anniversary of the FNC, Brazil welcomed Vélez’s proposal to jointly lead this important event.

Commitment to future technical exchange and cooperation between both countries’ institutions Cenicafé and Embrapa (Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation) was one of the results of the meeting, held during two hours.

Other issues such as agricultural loans, Brazilian legislation on rural labor, and current intervention mechanisms by the Brazilian Government when coffee prices are below the equilibrium point were addressed, as well as expansion of Brazil’s coffee frontier in states that traditionally had not grown coffee.

This meeting reopened spaces of negotiation between both countries, which are coffee leaders worldwide.
