Bogotá, May 8, 2019 (FNC Press Office) – The multinational Nespresso, with the committed support of the Colombian Coffee Growers Federation (FNC), launched today its Reviving Origins program in Caquetá to restore excellent-quality coffee production in a region that has been blighted by the internal conflict.

Under this program, the single-origin coffee Esperanza de Colombia -mild, very light in acidity, beautifully balanced and rounded, and with aromas of yellow fruits with a hint of a cereal note- will be available in 18 countries.

Coffee almost disappeared in Caquetá following 50 years of conflict, which meant many coffee farmers abandoned their lands. In partnership with local farmers and the FNC, Nespresso, also through its AAA Sustainable Quality Program, aims to support the rebuilding of this industry in the region.

“It is very gratifying for the Federation that Nespresso continues to be committed to the development of different regions in Colombia, including those most affected by the armed conflict, such as Caquetá. Our interests and capacities for common projects are still very much in tune,” the FNC CEO, Roberto Vélez, said.

“Nespresso’s AAA Sustainable Quality Program has had a positive social and economic impact in Caquetá. It has enabled to generate new life opportunities for the coffee communities of San Vicente del Caguán and Florencia by improving the quality of their coffee and the implementation of sustainable agricultural practices,” he added.

Jean-Marc Duvoisin, CEO of Nespresso, said: “Through our Reviving Origins program, we have an opportunity to bring back forgotten coffees, boost economic development in regions where there has been significant adversity, and share a completely new taste experience with consumers.”

With its Reviving Origins program, Nespresso is investing CHF 10 million over the next five years to revive the coffee industries in selected countries to encourage rural economic development.

Headquartered in Lausanne, Switzerland, Nespresso is a reference for highest-quality portioned coffee that operates in 80 countries and has over 13,000 employees. In 2018, it operated a global retail network of about 800 boutiques.

The company works with more than 100,000 farmers through its AAA Sustainable Quality Program, which aims to create long-term, sustainable quality through direct relationships with farmers.

The FNC represents over 540,000 coffee families in Colombia and its mission is to ensure their welfare. It provides producers with public goods and services such as R&D, technical assistance and value-added marketing, which have given Colombian coffee a great edge in the global coffee industry.
